On Wednesday 5th of Febuary 2014 my media class visited the BFI ( British Film Institue) in London. This was an oppertunity to expirence and discuss youth, media and collective identity. Matthew Hall Presented an idea of identity and collectve identity with the 'Mirror Stage'- where the child begins to develop their identity. Furthermore we dicussed how we use the cinema/ TV Screen as a 'mirror' to reinforce our identity. We then watched some clips from varoius films- the genre was youth culture. The films consisted of a dominant message, in which the author has encoded into the text. The clips we watched was from the movies;
- The Wild One
- Rebel Without A Cause
- Quadrophenia
- Kidulthood
- Human Traffic
- My Brother, The Devil
In most of the clips we watched, the main feel of the clip was that the young characters were most of the time dominant in the clip. We then went on and watched the whole of the movie " My Brother, The Devil" the storyline was situated in Hackney and was involved around gang violence and relationships in between gangs/ gang rivals.
